Harry had made his way back to the little town the next day. He sat perched in a tree, observing the bustle below. While he was waiting to pounce into action, he held his disguise tightly in his left hand, and his lucky nut sack in his right. There was more activity on the ground than yesterday. This was because he was there earlier than he was the day before. He realized that he would have to wait a few hours before he could begin his task of recovering his cache. He leaned back against the tree and closed his eyes, waiting for the opportunity to take what he sought.
As the noise decreased, Harry sat up and began watching. He was alert. He started moving from one tree to the next to find his first mark. He attempted to figure out the demeanor of each one. He found a squirrel that seemed to be a little paranoid. The squirrel moved quickly back and forth several times before he found a spot to dig and bury. Harry shook his head at the intensity of how hard it was for one spot to be chosen. This squirrel was clueless. It didn’t matter to Harry because the hard work would already be done. He just had to dig up the cache and move on.
The stash was ready. Harry waited for a few stragglers to leave the area. He placed his disguise, a red bandanna, over the lower half of his face. "Can't be too careful even if these poor fools are strangers", he thought. He jumped from the tree and began to dig up the cache! “This is just too easy. In and out.”, he said to himself. He liked the fact that it was easy but missed a little of the thrill, the fear of being caught. Harry moved from one cache to the next, ignoring his surroundings. He was following his nose.
Harry had made out well so far, and he was at the last cache of the day. This last one wasn’t necessary but he figured “Why not?” However, something felt different. He didn’t feel like he was…alone. His fur began to prickle in the back. Something wasn’t right. He whipped his head to the left. Nothing. He whipped his head to the right. Still nothing. Odd, Harry’s had been doing this for a long time but this time there was an uneasy feeling that he just couldn't shake. He felt like he was being watched. As he began to dig, he heard the rustling from above. He looked up. He only caught a glimpse, but saw the paranoid squirrel from the first cache jump from one branch to the next! He then saw another branch move from above to his left! Then another! Before he knew it, Harry saw 10 sets of eyes looking down on him! “Well, I didn’t see this coming.”
He looked down at the dirt. Looked up at the trees. Looked at the sack in his hand. He knew what was coming. If there were just one, he knew he would be alright. Ten? He wasn’t so sure, but he knew he had no choice. He knew exactly what he needed to do! RUN!
Harry rapidly moved up a tree and began to jump across different branches. Some of his nuts fell to the ground as he ran. He glanced back from time to time hoping he had lost those in pursuit. He hadn’t! They knew their town. They knew the area better than he did and didn’t seem like they were ready to give up. He had to come up with a strategy...
